DESERTED
[ABSENT may be more appropriate than "deserted" as titled in the AG Report. Men in these sections were not with their unit at the time of its retirement. After extended unexplained absences, the status of men was regularly changed from Absent Without Official Leave to Dropped from the Rolls as a Deserter. In fact, some men of the 17th were hospitalized, others prisoners, and perhaps others were dead from service-connected causes. A man must have been covicted by a courts-martial to be guilty of desertion.]
